but the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
~ Farewell message from Fr Mackle ~ I am taking this opportunity to say just a few words. My time with you as your Parish Priest will come to an end officially on Friday 6th September when Fr Michael Maloney takes over and I jump through the tunnel and become a soosider again! If you had a drone eye's view, you'd see priests and removal vans crisscrossing all over the Archdiocese on Friday!
It has been an enormous privilege to be your parish priest and serve you here these past 11 years. I will always remember with great fondness, thankfulness and love, you the good people of the parish of St Andrew’s, Bearsden. From the joy of baptisms, weddings, first communions, confirmations, welcoming our new Catholics through RCIA, hearing the beautiful sounds of the parish's singing and music (here's hoping there's a pop up choir where I'm going) visiting your homes, and the care homes, listening to your stories, attending all the important meetings, reaching out together with you through messengers and social media, reaching out with you to those in need, seeing all the parish's ministries in church and grounds, enjoying the parish socials, and the youth events of St Andrew's & St Joseph's, visiting pupils and staff and celebrating Masses in St Nicholas' and Turnbull High, praying with you, serving alongside Deacons Tommy and Nick, Monsignor Ryan and Fr Currie, celebrating the Eucharist together, seeing all the groups and organisations, praying and meeting with our brothers and sisters in the Bearsden churches, to the sadness of praying by the bedside of a loved one and anointing them, or sharing in the grief of laying a loved one to rest in the hope of eternal life - there is so much about the life and mission of St Andrew's that I could list and say - it truly has been a privilege to have served you, and, hopefully, I have helped to lead you closer to Christ and His Church.
I feel overwhelmed with an experience of gratitude as I recall the 11 years of my priesthood that I have spent here in St Andrew's - 11 very happy years. Next weekend will be Fr Maloney's first Mass with you. I am sure you will make him feel as much at home as I have felt over the years. Many many thanks.
May God bless you all.
Take care,
Fr Joseph Mackle.
