Assisted Dying Bills are currently being debated in both the Scottish and UK Parliaments. This issue is clearly a very sensitive one. People are moved by concern for those who are suffering and for their families. However, ironically, Oct 2024 marks the 10th Anniversary of the WHO call to all nations to fully integrate palliative care into their healthcare systems.
Nowadays a well established, effective Scottish palliative care service is facing a funding deficit crisis and a shortage of specialist nursing and consultant posts The NHS contributes a meagre 30% of costs. A more sustainable funding solution should be at the forefront of any future NHS reform. The benefits would include palliative care to more patients, a reduction in the number dying in hospital wards and, above all, the alternative to legalised assisted dying.
