A few words....

Hope all’s well.

Looking forward to this evening’s Mass for family and friends from RCIA, when our parish will welcome Yvonne McCafferty and Jen Wright into our faith by celebrating their initiation as full members of the Catholic Church. Please keep them in your prayers.

We can’t just take it for granted that we automatically always really hear what someone is saying.

To really hear, to really listen demands effort. To really give our full attention to what someone is saying requires effort.

There are folk who go on courses to acquire the necessary skills to be able to listen properly.

The parable of the sower, which is the gospel for today’s Mass, highlights the struggle involved in hearing the word of God. There are obstacles to be overcome. Sometimes we don’t always let the word of God take root. Sometimes we don’t take time to understand God’s word. Sometimes we can be too much caught up with other things and God gets sidelined - that can end up choking his word.

Good soil is what we’re to be - and that doesn’t happen automatically. Requires effort. If God’s word is to be truly heard and understood, we need to be good soil.

If we make the effort, obstacles can be overcome and our lives can be good soil, can be fruitful.

To read a little piece of scripture each day is good to do. Or to look at one of Sunday’s readings in advance, or reread it after Sunday is good practice.

Probably one of the best daily gospel reflections websites out is Word on Fire. Worth signing up for and it’s free.

Remember, weekday Masses are Monday to Friday. Only Mass on Saturdays is the vigil.

I look forward to seeing you, if you’re coming along to Mass this weekend.

Still no requirement though at this stage to attend, and remember, if you want,  you can catch Mass live streamed Sunday 10am.

Hope you have a good day.

A few words...

Hope all’s well.

Gradually, thankfully, a lot of what was postponed over the past four months can now be celebrated.

Yvonne McCafferty and Jen Wright, who have journeyed through RCIA, will be fully received into the Catholic Church tomorrow evening. Keep them in your prayers.

Baptisms and weddings can now be celebrated again, subject though to restrictions.

As the church needs to be sanitised after 12 noon Mass on Sundays, baptisms will take place on Saturdays at 12 noon. Maximum number of attendees is 50.  For weddings, it’s 20.

Please note that there will be no Mass on Saturday mornings. Only Mass on Saturdays is the Vigil.

As seating in the church is severely restricted, and with the government’s cap on numbers for a congregation, we’ll still need to wait that bit longer for the celebrations of First Communion and Confirmation to take place. As soon as we get word about these, we’ll let you know.

Just to remind you that if you’re looking for Confession, please just phone or drop me an email to arrange.

Today the Church honours the memory of St Bridget of Sweden. Co-Patroness of Europe. Born 13th century. Married a young prince. Had 8 children. After her husband’s death, she renounced her wealth and in devoting herself to the ascetical life, founded the Bridgetine order. She and her husband founded a hospital, she served the poor, and she was very much appreciated for her gift as a teacher.

In 1999, declaring her Co-Patroness of Europe, Pope John Paul II spoke about the need to build a more just world, but it must always be coupled with the awareness that human efforts are of no avail if not accompanied by divine assistance, divine grace.

‘Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain’

St Bridget pray for us and for our families.

Our parish’s Covid planning and evaluation group continues to meet weekly on Thursdays. Meeting today at 4.15pm.

Have a safe day.

A few words...

Hope all’s well.

When we recite the confiteor, we say, ‘and you my brothers and sisters’. It’s a lovely reminder to us that we are family.

As disciples of Christ, we are family - I got all my sisters and brothers and me - to alter the song’s lyrics slightly.

As brothers and sisters, as family, we are called to do the will of God. That’s today’s gospel message.

At Mass, when we pray the Lord’s Prayer, the Our Father, our family prayer, we pray ‘Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven’. We’re praying to do God’s will in our lives, to live as sisters and brothers, to live as the family of God.

Have a safe day

Take care, and remember new time for tomorrow’s private prayer is 2pm - 3pm.

First live streamed Mass Sunday 19th July 2020
A few words...

Hope all’s well.

It was really good being back together again for Masses at the weekend there. It was good being able to see some of you again. It was quite emotional, actually, I felt.

All thankfully went well for  the celebration of our Masses, especially for our first live streamed Mass.

There’s still no requirement at this stage, though, to go to Mass, but if you are intending to come along to a Sunday Mass, it will be lovely to see you and remember you’ll need to book a seat. Booking process for this weekend is open up until 12 noon on Wednesday.

No requirement to book for our 10am Mass live streamed weekday Mass. Just turn up, but earlier than usual, please, as names will need to be taken, hands sanitised and a steward will show you to a designated seat.

In the spiritual life, the life of faith, because we’re human, we might at times look for a sign. We might at times seek a sign so that we can have some kind of reassurance. That you’re there, God. That you’re hearing me. We might even play out in our minds some deal that if we get a sign from God then I’ll believe more, I’ll pray more, I’ll go to Mass more.

The Scribes and the Pharisees wanted to see a sign. Look at the gospel for today’s Mass. 16th week year 2. They were wanting a miracle so as to prove that Jesus was the long awaited Messiah. Instead of Jesus giving them what they wanted, he tells them that they will have their proof that he is the Son of God in his death and resurrection.

Anyway, about at times ourselves maybe seeking a sign. The real gospel challenge is the reverse. It’s this.  It’s not seeking a sign, looking for a miracle and then believing. It’s not seeing and then believing.

The spiritual life, the challenge in the life of faith, the gospel challenge is believing, having faith and trust in God, which leads us to seeing something of God. Faith and trust lead to seeing something of the mystery of God and his infinite love in our lives, in our world.

Have a safe and a good week

The Foodbanks continue to be very grateful for all your generous donations of food and toiletries. Although the church is open this weekend, we’d be grateful if you would still leave donations in the plastic box in the house porch, please.

A huge thanks to all our parish volunteers who ensure support continues to Drumchapel and St Gregory’s Foodbanks & The Wayside Club.

A few words....

Hope all’s well.

This evening’s 5pm vigil will be our first public Mass in four months. ‘Give thanks to the Lord for he is good’

Masses tomorrow are 10am and 12noon. You’ll need to have booked, though, as seating capacity is much reduced.

I just want to remind folk as well that there is still, in these circumstances, absolutely no requirement to go to Mass. It is still okay to stay at home and say your prayers there, or follow Mass live streamed.

Our 10am Mass tomorrow will be live streamed. Tune in to our parish’s YouTube channel which you’ll find on this link.

Our 10am weekday Mass starts again this Monday, and it too will be live streamed every day. At the moment, booking isn’t required, but please do arrive earlier than usual, as your contact details have to be taken, hands sanitised, and you will be led to designated seating. Remember to bring your face covering.

If you are going to be free to come along to Mass this weekend, it will be good to see you, and I do look forward to welcoming you.

Remember, we’ll be live streaming 10am Mass every day. Spread the word.

Finally, sincere thanks to all who will be assisting as volunteers in the coming weeks and months, without whom we wouldn’t be able to be returning to our weekend and weekday schedule of Masses.

Have a safe and happy Saturday.

Take care
Fr Mackle

But I want you to make yourselves heard in your dioceses, I want the noise to go out, I want the Church to go out onto the streets, I want us to resist everything worldly, everything static, everything comfortable, everything to do with clericalism, everything that might make us closed in on ourselves.

A few words...

Hope all’s well.

Last night’s Messengers meeting, thankfully, was very well supported, and our ‘Welcome Back’ leaflet will be getting delivered to almost 1300 households in our parish over the course of the next couple of days.

I am very grateful to our Messengers for all their help with ensuring that all in the parish are informed and fully updated with all that is happening before the Masses start back.

Over the past couple of months, much planning has gone into the preparations for our reopening for public Mass this weekend, and I am very grateful to all who have been involved and for all their efforts.

We would not be able to be returning to our usual schedule of weekend and weekday Masses without the help of all the volunteers. It is deeply appreciated the terrific response we have had to our appeal for volunteers. Always looking for more, though, so if you would like to help out, drop me an email or give me a call, please.

I am looking forward to our public Masses resuming, and really looking forward, too, to our 10am Mass each day being live streamed. You’ll be able to tune in through our website.

‘Something greater than the temple’ . This is what Jesus calls himself. See gospel for today’s Mass - week 15, year 2.

That would have very much surprised his disciples when they heard him say this.

They could not imagine anything greater than their magnificent Temple built by Herod in Jerusalem, considered to be one of the wonders of the world.

The Temple was the focal point of God’s presence to his people.

Jesus is greater than the Temple, because he is the new focus of God’s presence.

God, the living God was present no longer in a building, but through a person, his Son, Jesus, Emmanuel, God with us.

Recent periods of private prayer in the church has given people the opportunity to adore Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Many this weekend will get the opportunity, once again, to receive Jesus truly present in the Eucharist.

Hope you have a good day

Take care

Hope all’s well.

I find it’s always good to have a few short lines of scripture committed to memory to call upon.

For example, ‘The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want’, or ‘When you go through deep waters, I’ll be with you’ or ‘I have carved you in the palm of my hand’

One line that we should really have fixed in our memory is ‘I will give you rest’. Today’s gospel.

By his closeness to us, Christ makes our yoke easy and our burden light.

Jesus know how life can be weary and burdensome, and at times a struggle, and he makes no false easy promises about it.

The yoke will remain on our shoulders, and the burden may still have to be carried, but somehow with Christ, with faith, they become easier to bear.

Christ is for us ‘gentle and humble of heart’.

God is with us always. He is never far away. He is always by our side.

It’s a joyful road following Jesus, and we should let the world know that and see that. It is a joyful road even with the cross having to be carried.

Here’s another lockdown spiritual reading quote I noted and just to share with you. It’s from St Francis de Sales’ writings.

‘Bees live and feed on bitter food when making their honey; in the same way, we can never practice gentleness and patience or produce honey from such excellent virtues more surely than when eating the bread of bitterness and living in the midst of afflictions’

We had a good meeting last night for all passkeepers, stewards and our Planning & Reopening Team as part of our preparing to reopen our doors this weekend for public Masses.

Meeting this evening for Messengers for the distribution of the ‘Welcome Back’ leaflet which will be delivered to our 1300 households in the parish.

Hope you have a good day.

Take care

Fr Mackle
