Sunday 17th July 2022 Sixteenth Sunday of the Year

"Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart
and yield a harvest through perseverance."

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will take place next Sunday 24 July. The theme is ‘In old age they will still bear fruit (Ps 92:15)’. It’s always celebrated on the Sunday closest to 26th July, the Feast Day of Saints Joachim and Anne  ~ Jesus’ grandparents.
In this year’s message, Pope Francis says that old age is no time to give up and lower the sails, but a season of enduring fruitfulness: a new mission awaits us and bids us look to the future.  Pope Francis’ words are very encouraging, for as we look around the parishes of our archdiocese we see the long and faithful service offered by our elderly priests and religious and the decades long commitment of so many grandparents and the elderly in our own parish of St Andrew and all the other parishes.

There are these lovely lines from the Pope’s message -  “Dear grandparents, dear elderly persons, ….Let us become, as it were, poets of prayer: let us develop a taste for finding our own words, let us once again take up those taught by the word of God. Our trustful prayer can do a great deal: it can accompany the cry of pain of those who suffer, and it can help change hearts. We can be “the enduring ‘chorus’ of a great spiritual sanctuary, where prayers of supplication and songs of praise sustain the community that toils and struggles in the field of life”.
You’ll find the pope’s whole message on this link.
It is pleasant to spend time adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.  The Eucharist is such a priceless treasure ~ by praying before it, we are able to make contact with Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament.   Saturdays 10am until 11am.  Confessions throughout. Confessions – Also on Saturdays 4.15pm – 4.45pm & Sundays 9.15am – 9.40am

Before receiving Holy Communion, we are asked to make some preparatory act of reverence such as a bow.

The Padre Pio Prayer Group meets after 10am Mass each Monday in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. All most welcome.

Legion of Mary: A bus will leave from Milngavie Railway Station on Saturday 13th August at 6pm.and return around 9pm   Cost £8  Please place your name on the list in the Porch.  If travel needed to Milngavie, please email: ourladymotherofmercypra[email protected].

Do remember that our church is now open weekdays until 5pm, and on Saturdays until after the 5pm Vigil Mass. Call in and enjoy the peace and quiet, and take time to sit in the stillness in the silence of God. Teas and coffees are served in the hut after daily 10am Mass. All most welcome.

Piety Stall rota ~ We could still do with some volunteers for the 10am Sunday  Mass – if you could spare 15 minutes after this Mass to help, we’d be most grateful.  Any questions please call Anne MacIntosh 931-5861 or Annamaria Strachan 942-9799.

A message from Rita Smith and family ~ Thank you for all the thoughtful expressions of sympathy and for the Masses offered for Tom. We are very grateful to all for your kindness and your prayerful support. It is very much appreciated.

Live Streaming of Mass will finish this Sunday and become a service for special occasions only. The live streaming service has served us well over the past two years, especially during the lockdown periods when our church was closed, and when numbers were restricted.
With all restrictions now having been lifted, it is hoped that more and more people will make that effort to start coming back to Mass.
Parishioners who are housebound can still watch Mass at channels such as EWTN, Catholic TV or Mass Online. We thank our live streaming team who have operated this service very faithfully since July 2020.

Annulment and Marriage Validation - see Fr Mackle to learn more about the process if you are divorced and remarried or never married in the Catholic Church. There is now no charge to the petitioner for marriage cases at the Tribunal.

Interested in becoming a Catholic?– Not baptised? Baptised in another faith? RCIA will begin in the autumn. The programme of learning and instruction prepares adults for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Please speak to Fr. Mackle if you would like to know more about RCIA and the Catholic faith.

Reduce, reuse, recycle - Donation boxes are in the porch for uniforms suitable for reuse - an event will be held on Sun 24th July after 10am Mass in the Hall where you can pick up nearly new items to replace your donations – let’s all take small steps to save the planet.

For women affected by separation and divorce – next meeting of this confidential and peer support group is Fri 19th August in St Patrick's hall, Dumbarton 6pm - 8pm.  All new members are most welcome.  email: [email protected]

Catholic Social Teaching Thought for the Week - Meanwhile, the Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from self -giving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, para 88

Laudato Si’ - On Care for our Common Home - Change is something desirable, yet it becomes a source of anxiety when it causes harm to the world and to the quality of life of much of humanity. (#18)
