Catholic Social Teaching Thought for the Week - 21st February (World Day of SocialJustice is observed on 20th February)Love for widows and orphans, prisoners, and the sick and needy of every kind, is as essential to the Church as the ministry of the sacraments and preaching of the Gospel. The Church cannot neglect the service of charity any more than she can neglect the Sacraments and the Word.Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, para 22
The joint St Andrew’s and St Joseph’s Justice and Peace Group have had some meetings with a view to ascertaining what we can do in preparation for the United Nations COP26 climate change conference which is due to be held in Glasgow in November this year. Last year carbon emissions have fallen dramatically due to lockdowns that have cut transport and industry severely. However this has only marginally slowed the overall rise in concentrations of greenhouse gasses. It is important that we remain focused on global warming and doing what we can to reduce carbon emissions. We would like to share a few thoughts over the Sundays of Lent particularly referring to Pope Francis’ encyclical LAUDATO SI’ on care for our common home which focuses on what human activity is doing to the planet and the need to slow global warming. We will in addition keep you informed of any plans or events which we propose during the year.
