Hiroshima Day: 6th August marks the anniversary of the world’s first nuclear attack on the city of Hiroshima in 1945 and 3 days later Nagasaki killing over 200,000 Japanese civilians. 78 years on nine states now hold weapons many times more powerful than those used in 1945. Nuclear politics continue to drive gross global inequities and Putin’s nuclear threat over Ukraine increases the appalling risk of nuclear confrontation. Wholesale nuclear disarmament is now needed more than ever to provide a safer, fairer, better world, free from the dangers of nuclear weapons.
And they shall beat their swords into ploughshares …-neither shall they learn war any more. Isaiah 2:4
Save the Date! As part of the Season of Creation (1st September – 4th October) we are planning a "Creative Crafternoon" on Saturday 9th September from 2p.m. to 5p.m. We will have crafting materials available for all ages or just bring along your own and enjoy the spirit of creativity in good company. How can we propose peace if we constantly invoke the threat of nuclear war as a legitimate recourse for the resolution of conflicts? May the abyss of pain endured here remind us of boundaries that must never be crossed. A true peace can only be an unarmed peace.

Bishop Brian McGee, who will represent the Scottish Bishops at the Synod in Rome in October, has asked the people of the Archdiocese of Glasgow to look at the Working Document (Instrumentum Laboris) paragraphs 17-42 and offer a reflective and honest comment on them. Prayerful reflection on this section should allow us to notice ideas that ruminate with our own discussions and concerns and help Bishop McGee emphasise what is important to the People of God in this portion of the Lord’s vineyard. You are invited to consider this with others or indeed offer a personal reflection of the material.
The document in its entirety can be found on our Diocesan webpage under synod. Please can you send a summary of your reflections to [email protected] any time before the 10th of August.
These will be synthesised and become the Glasgow contribution to assist the Bishop in his task. The other Dioceses in Scotland are reviewing different areas of the document. To view our study section click https://rcagsynod.org/resources-for-parishes
